Shaw Island is the smallest of the four San Juan Islands served by the Washington State Ferries. The island has a land area of 19.952 km² (7.7037 sq mi) and a small year-round population of 240 (2010 census), with only a slight increase during tourist season. The Wilkes Expedition, in 1841, named the island after John Shaw, a United States Naval Officer. This island has the reputation for being “exclusive”, yet the island enjoys a rich, tight-knit community where everyone knows everyone and only the last four digits of phone numbers are given.
Many years ago, a sign was put high up, by an individual, at the terminal reading “residents and guests only.” The sign was so high that nobody wanted to climb up and claim it so it was posted for a couple of weeks.

Do you want to learn how to skateboard?

Is the fear of falling keeping you from progressing? Be taught all of the basics of skateboarding fast in a one-week camp. We will show you the principles of skateboarding like how to balance, push, turn, proper foot placement, and how to stop. Regardless, of where you are at.. you can benefit from customized instruction to meet your skill level.

Skateboarding is a leisure activity, a work of art, or a method of transportation. Skateboarding has been shaped and influenced by many skateboarders throughout the ages. A 2023 report by American Sports Data discovered there are 18.5 million skate boarders in the world. 85 percent of skaters polled had used a skateboard in the most recent year were under the age of eighteen, and 74 % were male. Those numbers have since doubled. In the ensuing years the skate parks tripled making it more accessible as privately owned parks and indoor parks are becoming a reality.

The most significant change has been the generation that skateboarded in their youth and have grown up with the “X” Games explosion into the world wide mainstream of competitive sports and now sees it as a participation activity for their children led by X-Games Athletes who are affiliated and instruct for our brand and web site.

How to Start:

  • Equipment: We recommend a board and a full set of safety gear. This includes: a helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, and wrist guards. Rental equipment is available.
  • Location: We can do lessons in your driveway, in your garage, or at the Shaw Island skate park.
