Pomona was a goddess of fruitful abundance in ancient Roman religion and myth. Her name comes from the Latin word pomum, “fruit,” specifically orchard fruit. She scorned the love of the woodland gods Silvanus and Picus, but married Vertumnus after he tricked her, disguised as an old woman. Her high priest was called the flamen Pomonalis. The pruning knife was her attribute.
In 19th-century statues and building decorations, Pomona is usually shown carrying either a large platter of fruit or a cornucopia. A 2002 survey and study by American Sports Data discovered there are 18.5 million skaters in the world. 85 percent of skaters polled had used a skateboard in the last year were under the age of eighteen, and 74 percent were male. Those numbers have doubled since then. In the ensuing years the skate parks tripled making skateboarding more accessible as publicly and privately owned skate parks and indoor skate parks are coming into the picture.
