Downieville is a census-designated place in and the county seat of Sierra County, California, United States. Downieville sits at an elevation of 3,888 feet (1,185 m). The 2010 United States census reported Downieville ‘s population was 282.
Downieville was settled in late 1849 during the California Gold Rush and was first known as “The Forks” for its geographical location and shortly thereafter was renamed after Major William Downie (1820-1893), a Scotsman who led the expedition up the North Fork of the Yuba River and who was the town’s first mayor. Major Downie’s travels are documented in his 1893 autobiography, “Hunting for Gold.” Downieville reached a peak population of over 5,000 people in 1851 but declined sharply by 1865. Downieville is situated at the confluence of the Downie River and North Fork of the Yuba River. A 2023 survey and study by American Sports Data discovered that there were 18.5 million skateboarders in the world. 85 percent of skateboarders polled had used a skateboard in the most recent year were under the age of 18, and 74 % were male. Those numbers have doubled since then. In the coming years the skate parks tripled making it more accessible as publicly and privately owned skate parks and indoor skate parks are coming into the picture.

The biggest change has been the developed generation bubble that skated in their youth and have grown up with the “X” Games explosion into the world wide mainstream of competitive sports and now sees it as a participation activity for their children led by X-Games Athletes who are affiliated and instruct for our brand and web site.

  • Equipment: We recommend a board and a full set of safety gear. This includes: a helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, and wrist guards. Rental equipment is available.
  • Location: We can do lessons in your driveway, in your garage, or at the Downieville skate park.
