Wakefield Skate Park is the Fairfax County Park Authority’s first skate park. It is situated next to Audrey Moore Recenter in Wakefield Park. Wakefield Skate Park is planned to be finished in three phases. Phase one, which opened on April 24, 2004 includes ramps, inclines, and grind rails.
Construction for phase two and three are pending bond monies. Phase two will be a Vert Ramp situated to the right of phase one when seen from The skate parking lot. Phase three will be a very smooth concrete bowl and will be situated behind phase one when seen from The skate parking lot.
Wakefield Skate Park officially broke ground September 8, 2003. This began the first of three construction phases of the facility. The architectural firm of Burgess & Niple Incorporated built the course layout after several meetings with skaters and BMX riders. The contractor, Tan-Kat Corporation are responsible for clearing the land, laying the very smooth concrete pad, lighting, fencing, and attendant building pad.
On September 29, 2003 Triple “J” Construction Inc was awarded the Elements Contract, and American Ramp Company of Joplin, MO was named the Elements Subcontractor. They are responsible for building the ramps and grind rails.
Since local skaters played an important role in making The skate park Authority aware of the need for a skate park, as well as helping out in the design phase, it seemed fitting to have a contest to design Wakefield Skate Park’s logo. Eighteen Fairfax County artists submitted a total of 82 designs! Entrants ranged in age from four to 18 years old. Entries included sket cetrahes, black and whites, colored pwarmos, and graphic art concepts. The judges had a tough job, but finally selected a drawing submitted by Nate Cherry, a 12 year old student at Kent Gardens Elementary School.
