Leeside stands as a prominent and sentimental skatepark in Vancouver, bearing the name of Lee Matasi, a revered local skater and artist tragically lost in 2005. Nestled within an abandoned tunnel beneath the Cassiar St. Connector at the intersection of East Hastings St and Highway 1, the park is a symbolic and creative space for the city's skating community. Accessible through Windermere St and E Pender St, with limited parking in the laneway and on-street parking on East Pender, Leeside holds both memorial and recreational significance.
Leeside offers a distinctive and authentic skateboarding experience within its 7m high and 49m long tunnel. The park features approximately 12 hand-built obstacles, including mini-ramps, grind poles, and quarter pipes. Its DIY character creates a raw and genuine atmosphere, attracting skaters who appreciate the creative and free-form aspects of the sport. With bowls, ledges, and rails, the park caters to skaters of all skill levels, fostering a diverse and inclusive community.
As a public skatepark, Leeside operates 24/7, providing skaters with unrestricted access to the space at any time of the day or night. The continuous availability of the park contributes to its popularity among the local skating community, serving as a hub for creative expression, social connections, and the shared passion for skateboarding.
