There may be no person more linked to skateboarding than Tony Hawk, and rightfully so. The Birman took the world by storm after landing his infamous 900 at the 1999 Summer X-Games, completing 2 and 1/2 rotations before gliding back into the ramp and tossing his helmet and pads into the crowd.

What many skaters and people don’t remember is that the 900 was landed after regulation and actually didn’t technically count. But skateboarding being what it is, something far greater than a competition or sport, the world remembers Tony Hawk for pushing what’s possible and representing skateboarding as an ambassador and public figure.

However, Tony Hawk has landed a new endeavor, an HBO MAX Documentary on his life as a skateboarder who’s often dealt with a question many skaters have had to ask themselves: “Is it time for me to quit skating?”

While someone like Tony Hawk, won’t ever really quit skating, as we learn in the documentary it’s not always up to you. Your body, the industry and what type of support you’re able to create for a future does have something to say about it…

Either way, we’re going to get right into everything you need to know about Until the Wheels Fall Off, the new Tony Hawk Documentary, included release date, when and how to stream it and what went into this film including not just the Birman, but arguably the most influential skateboarders of all time. You can watch the official trailer here.

What is the Tony Hawk Documentary?

The new Tony Hawk documentary is a film featuring prominent figures in the life of Tony Hawk, encapsulating his legendary career from a young shaggy-haired San Diego skate rat to the world’s most recognizable skateboarder. His story is told by director Sam Jones at a crucial point in Tony Hawk’s career, at a time when the teenager almost walked away from skateboarding completely.

Now approaching his mid 50s and still skating, the pioneer’s story receives never before seen footage and contributions from prominent figures like Christian Hosoi, Rodney Mullen, Stacy Peralta, Lance Mountain, and Mike McGill.

For this legendary skateboarder who’s done everything from creating one of the world’s most successful video game franchises, to appearing on the Simpsons, this is a documentary you surely do not want to miss.

Review for Tony Hawk’s Documentary – “Until the Wheels Fall Off”

As early numbers come in, the documentary has already captured a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – an American film review aggregation website used by some of the world’s top streamers. If you’re someone who watches a ton of netflix or Hulu, you know how important the Rotten Tomatoes reviews are.

The film has also enjoyed some positive reviews from Ross Bonaire of Collider, who notes director Sam Jones created a “captivating, edge of your seat documentary that manages to make the idea of landing a trick a genuinely moving scenario.” While us as skateboarders know how formidable landing tricks are to our passion, the film is conveying to non-skaters a passion seldom understood.

What many of the early reviews from HBO MAX subscribers is how intimate and connected they felt to the unprecedented access into the mind, body and soul of Tony Hawk. For most people, Tony Hawk impacted their childhood, through skateboarding or video games, and now, as we’ve watched him age and gracefully continue his ambassadorship to skateboarding, the new HBO documentary gives us a new glimpse into what it means to be the most prominent skateboarder of all time. And thus, what skateboarding has become and gone through to get to where and what it is today.

What’s Next for Tony Hawk?

Tony Hawk was recently injured after taking a heavy slam on his private half pipe. He was actually at the Oscars appearing with a cane shaking hands with some of the world’s most prominent celebrities, (all of which recognize the lanky, cane wielding figure).

While Tony Hawk has not officially announced his next trick (pun intended) after landing the “Until the Wheels Fall Off” documentary, Birdman continues to spread the message of his “Skatepark Foundation.” Helping to fundraise and build skateparks across the world to introduce more young people to the transformative powers of skateboarding.

In other words, no matter what is next for Tony Hawk, he will continue being a steward of skateboarding and making us all proud to be skateboarders.
