Interview by Allan T.
1.What is your name and background in skateboarding?
Insanity Boardshop, we stated back in 2012. Wanted to provide a great way for people to get around town and bomb some of the best hills in Texas and around the country by providing only the best longboards around.
2.How did the shop get started?
In 2010-2011 at University of Texas at San Antonio, I was instructed to make business plans about something that interested me. I choose to do it off of longboarding. My 1st project involved an indoor skatepark with a skateshop inside it also. This was merely a project that never was meant to take off. It did get me thinking more about the longboard scene in town and what I could do to try and make the buying experience better than what we get out of mall skateshops and big online stores.
3. Where did the name come from?
It just came from a lot of thinking about the sport and what we put our bodies through going so fast that we could almost die but we don’t and we act like it’s no big thing but it is quite insane actually.
4. What makes your shop different?
Unlike most skateshops that mostly do just skateboards and a small section of longboards we wanted to fill the script and offer mostly longboards. Yes it’s something different than your average skateshop. Some skateshops I walk into have a really small selection of skateboards and a great choice selection of clothing and shoes. You can’t really call yourself a skateshop or longboard shop if you have mostly clothes and shoes.
5. Why have you decided not to get into selling scooter part and accessories as other shops have?
Because 4 wheels are better than 2 wheels and scooters can’t go as fast. It’s not what we are about so why would I carry it.
6. With big brands, like Nike and Adidas, getting into skateboarding, do you think this is a good thing or a bad thing?
This really doesn’t pertain to longboarding. If they stick with just making shoes for us to wear I think it’s a great addition.
7. What do you think about the battle between chain mall stores and local skate shops?
The main difference between a shop like Zumiez vs. your local skate shop is that the skateshop knows what they are talking about and know their inventory. They skateboard or longboard all the time and push themselves to the limit too so they can connect on a level with their customers. Sometimes Zumiez gets employees that actually know something about skateboarding or longboarding but it’s rare.
8. How can people find out more about you? Any closing shout outs?
Our website is www.insanitybs.com or you can find us on Facebook or Instagram. Keep on skating, no matter how hard you fall get back up and try again.
