Provo was a Dutch counterculture movement in the mid-1960s that focused on provoking violent responses from authorities using non-violent bait. It was preceded by the nozem movement and followed by the hippie movement. Unlike these two movements, Provo was actually founded, on May 25, 1965, by Robert Jasper Grootveld, an anti-smoking activist, and Roel van Duyn and Rob Stolk, both anarchists. Provo was officially disbanded on May 13, 1967.
The Provos are thought to have evolved out of the artist Robert Jasper Grootveld’s anti-smoking happenings in June 1964. The following year other groups appeared as a fusion of small groups of youths around the pacifist Ban-the-bomb movement. Roel van Duyn is thought to have been the group’s theorist, influenced by anarchism, Dadaism, Herbert Marcuse, and the Marquis de Sade.

OUR SKATE INSTRUCTORS

Jose R. from Orem, Utah!

I’ve always been into skateboarding since I was a little kid and didn’t start until I was 14 but since then I fell in love worth it even more. I’m a good teacher because I teach patience and resilience with skateboarding there has to be patience and resilience, I always encourage people to get back up when they fall in a supporting way and always give affirmations to encourage progress.

Kallie H. from Provo, Utah!

I like a lot of things–drawing, playing my ukulele, and eating spaghetti–but my favorite of all is skateboarding. I grew up on the island of O’ahu, and have been skating for 13 years. I have five brothers and all of them skate, so I had the best teachers growing up. I looked up to them a lot, and still do! I’ve worked at Woodward West Skate Camp, and another skate camp in Hawaii called Hawaii Skate Care. I’ve absolutely loved teaching kids to skate. I’ve seen their confidence grow as they learn and progress in this sport. I’ve felt the joy skateboarding brings when you put time and effort into it, and I love sharing that joy with others.

Skateboarding is a pastime activity, an art form, or a method of transportation. Skateboarding has been molded and influenced by many skateboarders throughout the years. A 2002 report by American Sports Data found that there are 18.5 million skaters in the world. 85 percent of skaters polled had used a board in the last year were under the age of eighteen, and 74 percent were male. Those numbers have since doubled. In the coming years the skate parks tripled making it more accessible as publicly and privately owned skate parks and indoor skate parks are coming into the picture.

The biggest change has been the developed generation bubble that skateboarded in their youth and have grown up with the “X” Games explosion into the worldwide mainstream of competitive sports and now sees it as a participation sport or art for their children led by X-Games Athletes who are affiliated and instruct for our brand and web site.
