Vincennes Indiana Lester square park. This is the story, about a little park, that sets on the south side of Vincennes Indiana, This park sets between 9th street, and 10th street, and between Church street, and Barnett street., Its known as Lester square, named after the man its dedicated to, Sergent Lester Joseph junior. The donation of this park, to the city of Vincennes Indiana, was made as a memorial, to the son of Mr. Lester Joseph senior. May 10, 1949, the Vincennes sun commercial reported,that the City now owns lester square. Deed for the property formally presented. Lester Square , the city's newest park, has now officially became, the property of Vincennes. The American national bank, serving as trustee for the interest of lester Joseph, has presented the deed to the property, and it has been recorded formally. This word was announced at Monday nights meting of the city council. The council also passed unanimously, the official resolution expressing the appreciation, of the city to Mr. Joseph, for his magnificent gift of the park. Sergent Lester Joseph junior had lost his life, while serving during world war 2, he was Born 1923 in Jefferson Kentucky, his mother was Frieda Loub Joseph. Frieda Joseph died in 1943, she was stricken with Pneumonia while visiting her son in Kentucky, who was in the Army there, December 9, 1943. Sergent. Lester Joseph Junior, was assigned to the 459th BG 758th Squadron. Military Occupational Specialty MOS: Nose Turret., Killed in action, Dec 18 1944, Buried in the Permanent cemetery, Neuville, 1202nd block A , row 12, grave 2, Ardennes Neuville-en-condroz, Belgium. Ardennes American Cemetery, American military war grave cemetery, located in the village of Neuville-en-Condroz, near the southeast edge of Neupré, some 20 km, 12 mi south-west of Liège, in Belgium. Lester Square, was dedicated, on August 15th, 1951, A Big crowd was present, for the parks dedication, The dedication was broadcast, by radio station W A O V, Mr. Carl L Schaller, spoke on behalf of Lester Joseph, Former resident ofVincennes who then lived in Evansville Indiana, and who purchased the block square area, for a park as a memorial to his son, Lester Joseph junior . Mayor Bezt spoke on behalf of the park, and outlining the steps, which have been taken in development of the park site, and paying high tribute to the civic minded organizations, which have cooperated. John L Adams, was chairman of the committee which has organized , and supervised the development ,of the new park, and the 2 story building located there. The municipal band played a concert before, and after the dedication program. Vincennes Civic organizations, pitched in to remodel the house, and fit the grounds with tennis courts, and horseshoe courts, playground equipment, and finish rooms in the big house. This park has been an important piece of property to the citizens of Vincennes. The community center home which use to set on the property, was used by many organizations, for meetings, and plays, and more. On October 18 1951 A play, Out of the frying pan, was performed at the Pantheon Theater all proceeds went towards improvements of the south side park, many prominent citizens would be performing in the play. February 4th 1952, Mr. Strashun purchased play ground equipment, for Lester square, 2 slides, a big wave slide for bigger children, and smaller slide for the smaller children, one large merry go round, a set of swings, and a giant jungle piece. April 20th 1952 Vincennes chapter of American war mothers held a tree planting ceremony, and the dedication of a picture at Lester square house at 2 30 P M, May 4 1952, the picture had been presented to Lester square, by Lester Joseph senior of Evansville. During the 1950's little league baseball was played in this park, Later in the 1960's, church league softball was played there. On February 28th 1955, the Alice of old Vincennes grandmothers club held a meeting, and announced they are gifting a piano to Lester square, the gift will be in the 2 story building of course. a Meeting of the council's, parks and playgrounds committee, met May 5th 1958, Clarence stout suggested the building at Lester square be razed, and a smaller teenage center be constructed there. However they decided on a paint job, and repairing the porch would be done instead. On June 30th 1960, The community center at Lester square was being used by the police department, to register bicycles, to curb bike thefts in the city, And a great number of bicyclist showed up. Reported in the Vincennes sun commercial, Sometime around the early 1960's, the 2 story, Victorian house, on the property of Lester Square , was torn down.
