BACKGROUND: The Camarillo Skateboarding Park, affectionately referred to as "Cam Park", was built in 1998 by the City of Camarillo and was completely free of charge and did not have 18+ helmet and pad requirements, designated bike/skate/scooter time distinctions, or full-time park monitors until June of 2009. That summer, the city of Camarillo "donated" the skateboarding park to the Pleasant Valley Recreation & Park District (PVRPD), an entirely separate entity outside of the city's management. The PVRPD board quickly closed the park for over two months as they built a larger fence and enacted all of the aforementioned decisions–even against a large public outcry at their board meetings.

Going to the skatepark and trying to utilize it just as the thousands of people did for over a decade prior often resulted in immediate police action. Skateboarders were turned away for appearing at the wrong hours, boards were confiscated, lifetime bans, and even citations were issued. Worse: the board was not at all interested in working with us and local small businesses, like skateshops, to revert to the original rules–or even ease them slightly.

So, on National Go Skateboarding Day 2012, we decided to try and take back the park for a day; to have a single day that felt like "the good ol' days"—no fees to skate, no all-age helmet rules, and no sporadic hours to abide by. I organized the event, and with the help of our local independent skateshop, Revolution, t-shirts were made and a BBQ was to be hosted

The plan was simple: bum rush the park and enjoy a day of skating while raising awareness of us all not having a legal place to skateboard in the city of Camarillo.
