Japanese Wa (倭, “Japan, Japanese”, from Chinese Wō 倭, Hangul Wae 왜) is the oldest recorded name of Japan. Chinese, Korean, and Japanese scribes regularly wrote Wa or Yamato “Japan” with the Chinese character 倭 until the 8th century, when the Japanese found fault with it, replacing it with 和 “harmony, peace, balance”.
The earliest textual references to Japan are in Chinese classic texts. Within the official Chinese dynastic Twenty-Four Histories, Japan is mentioned among the so-called Dongyi 東夷 “Eastern Barbarians”. Note that the following texts are chronologically ordered by date of compilation, which does not always correspond with the sequence of Dynasties in Chinese history. In traditional Chinese units of measurement, distance is recorded in lǐ 里, which varied among dynastic standards, roughly equivalent to 300–400 meters. Tsunoda (1951:4) cautions that great distances in thousands of lǐ “are, of course, not to be taken literally.”
Possibly the earliest record of Wō 倭 “Japan”…

    OUR SKATE INSTRUCTORS

    Douglas B. from Bothell, Washington!

Doug has given lessons before and he likes to teach the basics. He likes to have kids or adults understand the easy tricks come first then into the harder/complex tricks. He intends to teach skaters to be consistent and comfortable through positive feedback constructive criticism and repetition.

    Dominic B. from Seattle, Washington!

I started skateboarding when I was 8 years old. Over the past 10 years, skateboarding has become ingrained into my heart and mind. I remember when I was younger, learning how to do kickflips and treflips in my garage during the winter and how good it felt to accomplish what I saw on the tv screens. Through skateboarding, I have learned the discipline to accomplish goals, build confidence, manage stress, and build meaningful relationships. I would love to impart what skateboarding has taught me to someone who wants to learn what skateboarding is all about. I have 7 years of teaching experience ( 1 year as a skateboard instructor) with people of all ages, I have a medical background as an EMT, and I also am a social/ relationally oriented person and would love to share our passion for skateboarding!

James is a passionate and dedicated skateboarder with over 15 years of experience on the board. He has experience both as a skateboard summer camp counselor and as a private skate instructor in his hometown of Naples, FL. Starting at age 10, James attended the skateboarding summer camp at his local skatepark, The Edge, which he later returned to as a camp counselor. He spent three summers teaching young kids the basics and fundamentals of skateboarding. At the same skatepark, James held private lessons arranged by the local skate shop for students in a one-on-one style of instruction.

He has always enjoyed sharing his love of skateboarding and seeing children progress and develop their own love of it. James has always had a passion for teaching what he knows. His specialties on the board include technical street tricks with an emphasis on flip-tricks, ledges, and rail skating. He is also a talented quarter-pipe and transition-style skater. His number one focus will always be the safety of the student. He understands the potential hazards of skateboarding, and always takes necessary measures to ensure that students are safe and out of harm’s way. James has the ability to teach students ranging from beginners to advanced skaters.

James is great with children and is excited to share his knowledge of skateboarding with everyone. He prides himself on being a positive role model for new skaters. Skateboarding is a recreational activity, a work of art, or a method of transportation. Skateboarding has been designed and influenced by many skateboarders throughout the years. A 2002 report by American Sports Data discovered there were 18.5 million skateboarders in the world. 85 percent of skateboarders polled who had used a board in the last year were under the age of 18, and 74 % were male. Those numbers have since doubled. In the ensuing years the skate parks tripled making skateboarding more accessible as privately owned parks and indoor parks are becoming a reality.

The largest change has been the developed generation that skateboarded in their youth and have grown up with the “X” Games explosion into the global mainstream of competitive sports and now sees it as a participation sport or art for their children as led by X-Games Athletes who are affiliated and instruct for our brand and web site.
