OUR SKATE INSTRUCTORS

Matthew S. from Memphis, Tennessee!

Skateboarding has been something that has brought joy and community to my life ever since I started. It’s fun, and exciting but can be difficult to learn if you don’t have help. Luckily for you, I’ve been skateboarding for about 12 years and have taught skating for about a year already. I can teach beginners just starting out how to stand, push, and maybe even get started on slopes, and little ramps. But I can also help skaters with a bit more experience with things such as harder transitions, popping higher on tricks, and skating rails, boxes, or stairs.

Benji S. from Memphis, Tennessee!

I started when I was 8 and skated the first plastic banana board until the bearings fell out. At 15 I got my first “real” skateboard, A Powell RIPPER. I skated 4-8 hours a day until I began my career in teaching, got married, and had a kid. In 2016, after a break of about 20 years, I restarted. A small unattended kid lost his board and it shot directly under me as I was dropping in. A week in the trauma unit, a plate in my pelvis & 6 months out of work. In October 2021 I restarted again. I sold my ballroom studio in February 2022, and I skate 4-6 days a week now, splitting time between an indoor park, the 3 outdoor parks, and my backyard mini. I started a (soon to be) nonprofit in October and raised enough funds to purchase 100 completes for local low-income kids. I hope to be helping Tyre Nichols’s family fulfill their wish to have a skatepark with his name on it. Experience: I taught kids & adults ballroom private lessons for 34 years. I have multiple certifications in dance teaching, equal to a Master’s Degree. I dropped out of college, working towards teaching high school English, to teach ballroom. I have taught thousands of people to dance a little, and a few to be national champions. I understand the theory of teaching, as well as the need to follow a process.

Learn Skateboarding in a Week-Long Class

Skateboarding is a recreational activity, a work of art, or a method of transportation. Skateboarding has been molded and influenced by many skateboarders throughout the ages. A 2002 report by American Sports Data uncovered that there were 18.5 million skate boarders in the world. 85 percent of skaters polled had used a board in the most recent year were under the age of eighteen, and 74 percent were male. Those numbers have since doubled. In the coming years the skate parks tripled making skateboarding more accessible as privately owned parks and indoor parks are coming into the picture.

The largest change has been the generation bubble that skateboarded in their youth and have grown up with the “X” Games explosion into the world wide mainstream of competitive sports and sees it as a natural participation sport for their children led by X-Games Athletes who are affiliated and instruct for our brand and web site.
